Obviously, we didn’t, as the week is almost over…and so, too, the stream of soothing articles and media releases on the miracle of modern endodontics. All have come courtesy of the American Association of Endodontics, sponsor of the, um, event.
According to the blurb at the end of their media release, Root Canal Awareness Week
provides an opportunity to dispel long-standing myths about root canal treatment and increase understanding of the procedure as one that is virtually painless. The week also seeks to raise awareness of endodontics as a specialty and highlight the importance of endodontists, the dentists who specialize in root canal treatment.
So, in the spirit of the AAE, we’d like to take this opportunity to dispel long-standing myths about root canal treatment…by drawing your attention to the important work of George Meinig, DDS, FACD – one of the founding members of the AAE.
However, Dr. Meinig’s research ultimately led him away from the AAE’s conventional wisdom about root canals. He found, rather, that for many, root canals cause more problems than they cure. He argued against this practice of keeping dead teeth in living mouths, where they ultimately serve as harbors for bacteria and other endotoxins. All this he put forth clearly and pointedly in his book Root Canal Cover-Up. Suffice it to say, we highly recommend reading it.
